Low numbers of people in “your” cycling organizations and advocacy groups. From the comments on “Why I’m not a ‘cyclist’ anymore,” a story about moving from a bicycle subculture (United States) to bicycle culture (Copenhagen):

In Amsterdam, 700,000(?) people cycle, only 4,000 are member of the Fietsersbond (cyclist’s union). We always explain this comparing it to the non-existing vacuum-cleaners union. Everybody owns and uses a vacuum cleaner, no-one feels the urge to unite themselves around this.

Hey, I’ve got a sick 12.0 amp bagless Regina with a HEPA filter. Suck it!

Seriously, I’m sure somewhere in America, there are groups of career housewives raving about household appliances on the Web with all the geekiness they can muster. There are lively underground cultures associated with all sorts of seemingly mundane things. I think American bicycle subculture is only so visible because it’s made up of people who enjoy being visible, so I don’t see it going away anytime soon. I predict that we’ll eventually assume the same status relative to regular American culture as, say, computer/tech geeks.
