Update June 15, 2011: The Chicago Bicycle Program has uploaded 22 photos and videos today. Here’s a video of workers painting the bike box at southbound Milwaukee. Also, I’ve been wrong about a bike-friendly bridge treatment on Kinzie – I don’t have evidence to support this assertion. We’ll see what happens.

Protected bike lane? Yep.

It should be 100x more clear now that cars are not allowed here. But I’m sure we’ll still seem some goof in the bike lane at least once in the next few days.

Crews installed the base, getting ready to install the pole.

And the bridge has bollards as well! No more double-driving on the bridge. Now it’s time for the new bike lane bridge deck!

Brandon Souba took the photos. Thank you so much.

I rode past at about 10am and the rest of the bollards seemed to be in, but that red corolla was still parked there!

The photos were taken at 9:30 AM. Hopefully the owner will get a ticket like this one for parking where “no parking” signs were posted.

I noticed the large green holding areas this morning at Milwaukee/Kinzie/DesPlanes… Didnt seem like any of the cars paid any attention… I think the biggest problem this city is going to have is now making the driving public aware that their cars should not be in those holding areas… otherwise… this is all pointless.

A few parking tickets will help spread the message.

All of that could be easily removed once a Republican takes hold of this city again. : They should try to make it a little more permanent.

I should point out that all of this was done with paint, and not thermoplastic. The paint will last about a year or two, so without refreshment or replacement with thermoplastic, the bike lane will disappear all on its own. Thermoplastic lasts about 5 years.

(Done with paint for time and cost reasons.)

      Right…in Chicago…

I don’t think it will have anything to do with political party affiliation. Chicago once removed an airport. Oh wait, that was only 7 years ago!

        • Aaron Brown

Tiny airports for private plane owners are the Republican equivalent of bike lanes – caters to the base.

I was making a joke, but I do think the broader point stands. It’s going to take some serious organizing effort to ensure that these bike lanes are well-maintained and preserved in the face of fiscal hardships and inevitable complaints from drivers/business owners.

I hope the bicycling community can come together to make sure this type of progress continues.

I resent that as a biking republican!

    Much better than yesterday!

I wonder how this is going to get plowed in the winter though…

      Kinzie Street snow removal
When a meeting attendee asked how snow would be dealt with on the Kinzie Street protected bike lane, CDOT Deputy Commissioner Luann Hamilton mentioned that new CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein built similar lanes in Washington, D.C., where it also snows, and will bring his experience in this to Chicago.

I think the bike lanes will be great. As someone who drives once a week and bikes the rest I think it will improve on safety for bikers as long as the bikers obey the rules of the road also. Which we all know doesn’t happen now. I’m sure some idiot drivers will still do stupid things as well. I would love to see them do the whole stretch of Lincoln because I always feel unsafe riding to work every morning and night but its great exercise so I try not to think about it. Ride on!!!
